Which camp are you in?
You possibly have a foot in two camps with the rapid advances in technology. On one side you're excited about the future and what opportunities robotics, AI and new technologies will bring us. Think about driverless cars, ultimate personalised shopping experiences and a life that is made easier with automation.
Then on the other side, you may be fearful, suspicious and doubtful over the perceived promises of making life easier that technology is notorious for known for. For good reason too, even the world's experts in this matter (think Steven Hawkins and Elon Musk) are warning of the dire consequences when machines get too big for their boots and start to out-think humans.
So where do we stand on the matter?
Well, we're pretty like everyone else - trying our best to keep up with these blinding fast changes, whilst wondering how it will impact the human race as a a whole and questioning if that is a good thing. One thing that we will say however, is that there is very little you can do to stop it, so you may want to decide if you're on the side of "well if you can't beat them..." or "the world's gone crazy we're moving out to the country."
From a marketing point of view we're definitely on the "if you can't beat 'em" camp. The key to reaching your customer in the future is taking the data that we know about them and using that to present a personalised experience. The websites that we are building now already that facility.
For example, what if your website could intelligently determine if this was that person's first visit to the site? Well, for starters you could offer a friendly welcome message that said "Thanks for Visiting Us Today..." That same message on the second or third visit is going to lose it's impact so what about a different message for subsequent visits?
Summary
With this small example you can see that the future is actually already here. It may be as subtle as a welcome message or personalised email, but rest assured it's a mere glimpse of what's coming, and used wisely it can be part of your business's transformation to a Smart Business that uses technology for the good of mankind.
